First Visit to MCA Denver

Last week, I got a chance to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Denver. This was my first visit to MCA Denver and I was not disappointed. Aside from the wonderful art that I saw at the museum, the thing that impressed me the most about MCA Denver was its' dedication to up and coming artist and the feeling it gives as one views its' variety of galleries. Your name does not have to be Rembrandt, Picasso, Warhol, or ..., well you get the idea. Nothing against the great classic artists, we all love to look at their work, but it is nice to tour a gallery that gives a young or up and coming artist a sense that maybe their work could be shown in an awesome setting like the MCA Denver. Let me be clear, this is not a knock on the MCA or any of the artists with works there. This is a compliment to both and Rocky Mountain Art Group is very appreciative of these types of settings and all artists who give us the opportunity to see their works.

Located a couple blocks from Denver's 16th Street Mall and Union Station, MCA Denver is a great place to include in any LODO trip. MCA Denver has been around since 1996 but didn't open in its' current location until 2007.  The current location has about 27,000 square feet of space and hosts multiple exhibitions from different artists. They even have a roof top bar and grill if you would like to get a drink or a snack. The exhibitions change frequently so there is always something new to see.  You can find lots of good information about MCA at :

Since this was my first visit to MCA Denver,  I'm not going to talk about any of the particular artist or their exhibits. I do want to mention something that I do really like about this museum and that is its' dedication to youth and teen programs. Teens are something that they really focus on and I believe that they have a great program to get teens involved.  First of all, admission for teens is always free. Second, they have an entire gallery which is dedicated to just teen artwork. This exhibit was probably the one I enjoyed the most in the museum.

The artwork here was terific and inspiring to all ages and experience levels. MCA hosts teen only evenings, art sows, contests and labs. They also offer a teen ambassador program in which teens can apply to work at the museum for a semester. They really have some wonderful programs to get young artists involved and give them some exposure.

I really enjoyed my first trip to MCA Denver and look forward to making another visit soon. I highly recommend making a visit to MCA Denver. It is well worth the price and a great place for the whole family.
