Going on an Art Hunt: Antique Stores

Image
If you have ever been to a large antique store, then you may already be aware of the great art pieces that can be found there. When we want to look at art we often think of museums or art shows and we forget about these types of places where there can be an abundance of art to check out. Antiques stores have an extremely wide variety of art and in large ones, you can often spend hours looking at it. A few weeks ago, we went to a local antique store in the Denver area. There was so much to look at that it took us a couple of hours to walk through it. Keep reading below and we will discuss why antique stores are a great place to find art and I will show you a small portion of what we found. If you like what you see, you might be inspired to visit some antique stores to see what you can find. Why Antique Stores? If you have never been to an antique store, you might be wondering why anyone would go to one to find art. Isn’t it just a store full of old furniture and knick-knacks from old ho

How do I become an Artist?

Image
As we often discuss here at RMAC, art is everywhere and what is and isn’t art is often subjective. This can be a never-ending argument, but what about those who create art? If what they create is in fact art, then they are artists. Aren’t they? How does one become an artist? Painting by Melissa Medina This again, can be very subjective, but it may also depend on what type of artist we are talking about. Do you want to be a professional or a hobbyist? Do you want to be a painter, a sketch artist, a musical artist, or a graphic designer? As you can see there are many different nuances. Becoming an artist can be a simple process or can take hours of study and practice. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Let’s discuss what an artist is, what one's goals might be in becoming an artist, and what paths you might need to take to accomplish those goals. What is an Artist? If you look up the definition of artist you will find a variety of explanations. Below are a few commo

Going on an Art Hunt: Places to Find Art

Image
When we think about art, many of us automatically think of Museums, art shows, or art festivals. They are the go-to places to find art but not the only places. Our world is full of art. It's all around us and often in places we may not think of. Picasso Prints Found in an Antique Store This series of posts (Going on an Art Hunt), will discuss alternative places to find and appreciate art. Today we are only going to introduce this series by briefly discussing the fact that art can be found in many places other than museums.  We will talk about why you should look for art in other venues and then we will preview some of the places where we have found art and will discuss it in upcoming articles.  Different Types of Art At RMAG we have always made it a point to acknowledge that art exists in a multitude of forms. It's not just a painting hanging on the wall or a statue in a garden. Art is everywhere whether it is seen and acknowledged by all or just a few.  With this being said, t

What is an Artisan?

Image
An artisan is a skilled person who creates useful items, usually by hand or with some type of manual process. A good example would be a person who creates items such as jewelry that they might sell at a craft fair, marketplace, or online store. Photo by Melissa Medina Artisans can be found all around us, making items such as jewelry, clothes, pet accessories, food and snacks, candles, home decorations, and much more. The abundance of artisans has grown greatly in the past few years, leading many who were not familiar with the term, to ask “What is an Artisan?”. I have given you a definition and example above, but this may lead to more questions and we will discuss some of them below. So let’s continue discussing why there is such a surge in artisans today, whether or not an artisan is an artist, and if an artisan creates art.  The Artisans Around Us If you haven’t noticed, there are artisans all around us. Of course, you’ll find them at arts and crafts fairs and you’ll see their work o

Rocky Mountain Art Group is Back

Image
Well, we never really went anywhere but it's been a long time since we have posted any new content. I am not going to attempt to explain why. Many different things have happened that put this site and its content on hold.  At one point I had an attempt to get it back up and going but things didn't work out. Fortunately, we were able to keep the site up and running where we last left off and keep our URL so everything is still in place. I am now excited to continue not only where we left off, but with some new ideas and types of content that will expand the scope of RMAG (Rocky Mountain Art Group) and our community. My name is Eric and I, along with my wife Melissa, am a co-founder of RMAG. You may have read some of my posts or you may be new to our site. Either way, I would like to welcome anyone who would like to read about, learn about, explore, create, or even just appreciate art. I will use this post to reintroduce Rocky Mountain Art Group, and discuss some of the changes a
